GOT QUESTIONS?

What is functional medicine?

The functional medicine model is an individualized, person-centred, science-based approach that empowers the person being seen and the practitioner to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of that person’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalised treatment plans that lead to improved health outcomes.
By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find one condition has many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, functional medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual.

What is naturopathy?

Naturopathic medicine, or naturopathy, is the application of natural therapies for the management and prevention of disease. Blending modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine, it is based on the healing power of nature and how it can be harnessed to support and stimulates the body’s ability to heal itself.

How do I book a consultation?

To book an appointment please email sophie@amoderntopic.com or fill out the online form
on the Contact page.

How many consultations will I need?

Most people benefit from at least three consultations-the initial and 2 follow ups. For complex and chronic conditions, it may be necessary to work together for a longer period of time.

What should I bring with me?

Any recent test results you may have. Your food diary and health questionnaire need to be returned to 48 hours before your appointment.

Is your work compatible with the medication I need to take and the doctors I currently rely on?

Absolutely. The aim is for us all to work collectively for an improvement in your health. Everything I practise is compatible and can integrate with mainstream medicine. I reject all notions that modern medicine doesn’t have its place, and I’m an advocate in working alongside it whenever necessary. During our consultations it is paramount that you tell me all drugs you are on- prescriptive, natural and recreational to ensure I can do my necessary checks for ensure compatibility and to support you in combination with them.

Are you going to make me give up loads of foods? I’ve already tried lots of exclusion diets and they never worked for me. Why would they now?

The intention is never to make anyone give up lots of foods they love. Yes, there might be that time when we have to go the whole hog and eliminate some foods or drinks, but regardless we will always work to your preferences and in the boundaries that you set. It’s great to think a single dietary change could yield a complete transformation, however I daresay if it was as simple as cutting out a single food, or food groups, and seeing a complete resolution of symptoms I doubt you’d be online, searching for help or even on this page now. Immune dysfunction can be complex and conditions are often multifactorial with many contributing elements at play. My role is to help people make informed decisions that will support their health and give appropriate guidance to ensure diets are safe. Food should be a source of pleasure, and not stress and the aim is to make the journey enjoyable and sustainable, and to ensure food becomes or remains a pleasure. Please rest assured it’s never about pointless changes to diet, misery and denial.

Do you work with children, toddlers and young adults?

I do indeed. Both as the sole focus and within family consultations. Many children can have eczema and allergic symptoms from a young age, and certainly as they wean, become toddlers and grow into young kids. Their microbiomes are evolving, maturing and are in flux. There is a broad range of tactics, supplements, food ideas and more that work for children.

Similarly teenagers can suffer flares and experience early adult-onset issues, as they begin to live more independently and make their own choices outside the home and amongst their peers. Children under 16 requiring a parent or legal guardian to be present at all consultations.

What are the advantages of a package?

Advantages of being on a package include:
• Cost savings in comparison to intermittent and individually booked consultations.
• Regular contact between appointments ensuring increased ongoing support.
• Dedicated time continuously allocated to your case behind the scenes.
• Swifter analysis of test results, with feedback and action plans available between appointments.

• Higher discounts on supplements.
• Payment plan availability.

Can I move from standalone sessions and packages?

Our discovery call offers the perfect opportunity for us to discuss the potential best routes forward. Consistent improvements in health can take time so I do recommend multiple sessions to realise your goals and keeping these on a regular footing works best. Ad hoc appointments spaced out works wonders for some, and many of my clients begin with starter packages and later move to ad hoc sessions as their health improves. The aim is to create a routine that maximises success and works with people’s commitments, availability and budgets.

I don’t feel I need or want the additional offerings in your packages. Am I obliged to use them?

The packages are designed to offer value and provide you with a combination of therapies that you can draw on for your own harmony and healing. Tailored packages can be created across all modalities to individual client needs and wishes. During our discovery chat you are welcome to discuss what you feel potentially drawn to and would benefit most from. For example, if you’d like additional consultation or researched time over a massage that is fine.

I can’t afford laboratory testing, can we still work together?

There is absolutely no requirement to have any independent laboratory testing carried out and plenty of clients move forward positively with their health and protocols without the need for additional testing. This is one area that costs can mount up and often budgets don’t allow, it is something no practitioner should ever force. Wherever possible I will refer you to your GP for tests available on the NHS.

What type of herbal medicine do you practise?

I practise Western Herbal Medicine, whilst incorporating Chinese and Ayurvedic principles. I also utilise plant medicine across nutrition and aromatherapy. All these areas approach health from a holistic perspective, being people centred and individually tailored.

Do you use animal products as I am vegan?

Vegan products can be sourced and a person’s ethical and religious requirements are always easily accommodated. Plant and fungi materials are rich offerings to assist wellbeing. Non-gelatine capsules and vegetable glycerine can be used. Animal derived products such as beeswax and propolis can also be avoided when working with topical applications such as creams, ointments and salves and vegan alternatives are available.

Do you use only alcohol in your tinctures?

Alcohol in small amounts is often used in concentrated plant extracts to help extract and preserve the active ingredients of the plant. For people who are unable to take remedies containing alcohol for any reason there are always other options available.
